Notes |
- STIEFELMEYER, JOHN ULRICH was born on April 12, 1824 in Ulm, Wurttemburg. In 1852 he emigrated to America, married Johanna Stowe, and located at Pen-Yan, New York. From this marriage they had four sons and four daughters. He died in Rochester, N. Y. on October 2?, 1896.
He moved to New Hamburg in 1855 when his card appeared in the Hamburger Beobachter on February 15,
Dr. Stiefelmeyer - German physician, Surgeon & Accoucheur. In New Hamburg. Residence in Mr. J. Rockie. s house.
Of his medical education there is no record available, but when he was registered in November 1866, he was granted his licence as an Eclectic Physician.
Regarding his practice, the New Hamburg Volksblatt of Nov. 4, 1896, said:
The doctor had a very large practice here and we can still remember quite well how he drove his white horse and single seater buggy racing in response to an urgent call. In his manner he was very affable and had all the love and respect of all who had the privilege to know him. He did not avoid any effort to bring help when help was still possible, and went about it quite energetically and with great dexterity,
In October 1882, because of ill health, he left for Cullman Alabama where he stayed with his youngest son. When his health improved he conducted some practice, and went into the cotton business as well. His health failed again and they moved to Rochester, N. Y. in 1890, where he lived until he died.

Dr. Stiefelmeyer Dead
Dr. J. M. Stiefelmeyer, a former, much-loved resident of this town, is dead. The deceased gentleman, who was the father of C. A. Stiefelmeyer, Cullman's popular and successful merchant, was at the time of his death a resident of Rochester, N. Y., removing to that city from Cullman about six years ago.
While a resident of this town Dr. Stiefelmeyer erected the commodious residence on the Gude property, which is now occupied by Col. Humphrey, Foremost in church and charitable enterprises, and a citizen of tho highest type, Dr. Stiefelmeyer won a place of highest esteem among the people of this town, all of whom will learn with regret of his sudden demise..
