Notes |
- Lion Brewery, Christopher Huether, King Street, Waterloo - This business was established twenty seven years ago, and since its inception has steadily and rapidly advanced in volume until at the present day it holds a prominent and enviable position among the larger breweries of the country. The premises occupied are 70x250 feet in dimensions, and the brewery is three stories in height, with hotel in front, which is four stories. All are solidly built of brick, and the architecture of the hotel is imposing and artistic, and an ornament to the street. The brand of lager manufactured is the celebrated "Lion" brand, which has a wide-spread reputation throughout Waterloo and Perth counties, where the sale extends. Employment is furnished to nine competent hands in the brewery, and four heavy teams are used in the delivery business. The brewery contains thirty-two fermenting tubs and all the latest and most improved machinery and appliances, while the engine is 25-horse power. The annual output of the brewery is 10,000 barrels, and the malting capacity is 15,000 bushels per season. In the hotel there are forty well lighted and ventilated and comfortable bedrooms; seven parlors, neatly furnished; dining-room, office and bar. The menu is excellent, and contains all the delicacies of the season as well as the substantials, while the cuisine is unsurpassed by that of any other chef in this section of the county. Accommodation is made for both transient and regular boarders, the rate being $1.00 per day, with special rates to regular boarders. Mr. Huether, the genial and popular host, is a native of Baden, Germany, and is a gentleman of much business executive ability.

___________
AN OLD RESIDENT GONE.
Christopher Huether Passes Over to Join the Majority After a Few Months Illness.
Early on Tuesday morning Christopher Huether, for many years a familiar figure on our streets, passed away, after suffering for some months of a dropsical affection, at the age of 67 years and 10 days. His name is inseparably connected with the fine substantial brick structure on King St., known as the Huether House. Four years ago his son, Mr. C. N. Huether, assumed full control of the Brewery and Mr. Huether, sen., retired. About four months ago he undertook the management of the Agency at Penetang for his son where he remained until four weeks ago when he was brought home ill. The funeral will take place from the residence of his son, Mr. O. N. Huether, King St. at 1.30 p. m., Friday, to St. John's Lutheran Church, for service thence to Mount Hope cemetery for interment. The late Mr. Huether emigrated from Germany forty-four years ago. After remaining in Albany, N. Y., two years he came to Waterloo where he resided up to his death. About forty years ago he entered in partnership in the brewing business but soon after bought out his partner's interest and carried on the business himself until about four years ago.
Mr. Huether served a number of terms as town councillor. He was a life long member of the Lutheran church and served for many years on the trustee board. He was twice married. His first wife nee Kleeberger predeceased him twelve years. Nine children-two sons and seven daughters were born of this marriage, viz: Christian N. and Jacob Huether; Mrs. Onas. H. Froehlich, Mrs. Thos. Sherman, Mrs. C. Treusch, Mrs. Hy.Shaefer. Three daughters predeceased him, Annie, Sophia and Mrs. Kellar. In 1888 he was married to Mrs. Norman Snyder who survives him.
