  SNIDER, Harold -- Of 300 Regina St. N., Waterloo, age 69 years at K-W Hospital Saturday, July 11, 1981, after a lengthy illness. Beloved husband of the former Marguerite Bechtel, who is left to mourn his passing; dear father of Ken and daughter-in-law Pat of Bloomingdale and daughter Frances and son-in-law Wayne Starr of Barrie; dear grandfather of Kerry, Brian, Kathryn, Kevin, Karen and Leanne. Also survived by foster sisters Joyce Schlatman of Guelph and Gladys Pfanner of Kitchener. He was predeceased by his parents; Peter Alba and Eliza Jane Strong; one son, Neil and one brother Maurice. Mr. Snider was an active lifetime member of Bloomingdale United Church and a long-time resident of Bloomingdale. He owned and operated Snider's Market along with his son, Ken, for many years. He was assessor for the former Waterloo Township, tax collector and assessment commissioner for the former County of Waterloo, elected councillor of former Waterloo Township, and later elected councillor of the newly formed Woolwich Township Council, Ward 3, for four years. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 7 p.m. today. Funeral service in the Ratz-Bechtel Chapel, Monday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Wilbur Rodgers and Dr. E. E. Kent officiating. Interment in Bloomingdale Mennonite cemetery. The Kitchener-Waterloo Record 13 Jul 1981 _____________________ Ex-councillor dies following lengthy illness Harold Snider, a well-known Woolwich township assessor and politician, died Saturday at age 69 after a lengthy illness. The Waterloo resident was an assessor for the former Waterloo township, tax collector and assessment commissioner for the former county of Waterloo, and a councillor of the Woolwich township council for four years after it was formed in 1973. He was a long-time Bloomingdale resident and owned and operated Snider's Market, along with his son Ken, for many years. In 1978 and 1976, Snider was defeated in bids to be mayor of Woolwich township. Snider was elected president of the Western Ontario Association of Assessors in 1959. He resigned as county assessor in 1964 mainly for business reasons, but he also said the attitudes of some politicians and former politicians were a factor. He strongly represented his rural constituents, saying, at one point that they should not have to pay for improvements to Elmira's downtown. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Bechtel, a son Ken of Bloomingdale, a daughter Frances (Mrs. Wayne Starr) of Barrie, and six grandchildren. He is also survived by foster sisters Joyce Schlatman of Guelph and Gladys Pfanner of Kitchener. Funeral services were held today in the Ratz-Bechtel Chapel, with burial at Bloomindale Mennonite cemetery.
