Notes |
- The following has been forwarded to us in a copy of the Grand Rapids, (Mich.) Daily Eagle, of date July 24: - "George Thomson, whose death is announced today, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, June 23, 1831. The family came to this country in 1843 and stayed in Western New York, whence, in the following year he removed to Canada. In 1853 he married Sarah Bechtel. From there he came to Grand Rapids in 1860 and engaged in the bakery business in the Squier block on Canal street. Giving that up in 1865, he followed the occupation of bookkeeper and general clerk for about two years, and then for about three years was engaged in the grocery trade. In 1870 he entered the real estate business, in which he continued until disabled by is final illness. He served in the Common Council in 1878-9 when he was active in advancing the improvement of Crescent Park. He was one of the founders of the Westminister Presbyterian Church, of which he continued a faithful member during life. He leaves a wife and four daughters.
