- THE LATE DR. PHILIP
The death of the late J.R. Philip, M.D., M.C.R.S. Eng., which occurred last Wednesday evening, leaves a blank in the list of our oldest citizens, and a diminuation of the number of the kindly, honest men, whom everyone feels the better for meeting. The Dr. was born in Aberdeen , Scotland , in 1829, and emigrated with his father, to Canada in 1841, settling in Galt. Soon after coming to Galt he commenced the study of medicine at Toronto University , where he graduated and in 1847 was licensed by the Medical Board of that day as medical practitioner. After practicing his profession in Galt for a short time, he went to Aberdeen where he graduated as an M.D. in 1851 at Aberdeen University . Thence he went to London , and in 1852 completed an unusually varied and excellent medical education by graduating as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. The Crimean war soon commencing the Doctor accompanied the English army to the Crimea, and did active service on the battlefield and in the hospital till the close of hostilities, receiving as a recognition of his labors the English and Turkish medals for faithful service.
In 1859 he returned to Galt and recommenced practice here, where he has remained ever since. The Doctor's skill as a physician, and particularly as a surgeon, gave him a wide reputation and a standing in his profession such as but few have attained. Among those who knew him he was popular and respected. His manners were kindly, and without affectation, and his sterling honesty and straight-forwardness were universally admired. Few men have possessed the faculty of being outspoken and yet making their mark in the community, without making enemies, but the doctor was one of the few, and living without an enemy in this community his death is regretted by all who knew him. He leaves behind him a widow and several children to mourn his loss. The funeral on Friday was largely attended, nearly every one of the clergymen, physicians, and business men of the town following his remains to the grave.
The Dumfries Reformer Wed March 17 1880
____________
PHILIP, JOHN ROY was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1829 and came with his father to Galt in 1841. He attended the University of Toronto, graduating in 1847.
When he received his licence to practice he was listed in New Aberdeen. Presumably he remained there until April 1849 when his card appeared in the Huron Signal, Goderich:
J. R. PHILIP Surgeon Stratford.
Although this card ran until September 6th., an item in the issue of August 9 said:
Dr. J. R. Philip has resigned his practice as Physician and Surgeon in Stratford, and we understand that Dr. Hyde, of Embro, has succeeded him.
He went from Canada to Great Britain for further studies, and in 1851 received his M. D. degree from Aberdeen University. In 1852 he became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. He then volunteered his services for the Crimean conflict, and for recognition of his activities in the British army, received medals both from the English and Turkish forces
On his return to Galt the Dumfries Reformer of June 30, 1858 carried his card:
John R. Philip M. B. M. R. C. S. ENG. RESIDENCE Immediately behind Trinity Church.
A further notice was in the issue of April 11, 1860:
Dr. John R. Philip, Late Assistant Surgeon H. M. 18th. (Royal Irish) Regiment.
Dr. Philip has been engaged for 13 years in the Active practice of his profession, in various parts of the world.
His practice prospered, and on December 14, 1864 a notice appeared in the Dumfries Reformer.
We are glad to observe that Dr. Philip who has recently been appointed Health Officer for the town has opened a surgery and dispensary in connection with his practice in the building between Mr. Gavin'Hume's store and the Bridge. The Doctor has also secured the services of a first class assistant and has removed his office to the surgery.
A couple of years later the Fenian raids prompted him to volunteer once more for military service, the Galt Reporter on June 15, 1866 remarked.
We have just seen a letter from Colonel P. A. MacDougall, Adjutant General, conveying the thanks of Lord Monck to Dr. Philip, late of her Majestie's 18th. Royal Irish Regiment, for the prompt offer of his services as Surgeon on the occasion of the late Fenian raid.
The rest of his career was uneventful, and he died suddenly on March 10, 1880, leaving his widow and several children.
The Galt Reporter said. Jr. Philip was widely known and universally respected in this locality as a Physician, and enjoyed the thorough confidence of his fellow practitioners. Of a very straightforward disposition, his warm generous feelings entered directly into his relations with his patients.
He will be very much regretted in the many households where he was as much the friend as medical adviser.
The Galt Reformer said: The Doctor's skill as a physician, and particularly as a surgeon, gave him a wide reputation and a standing in his profession such as but few have attained. Among those who knew him he was popular and respected. His manners were kindly, and his sterling honesty and straightforwardness were universally admired. Few men have possessed the faculty of being outspoken and yet making their mark in the community without making enemies, but the doctor was one of the few, and living without an enemy in this community, his death is regretted by all who knew him.
