- George Stewart
At his home in Val Verde, Cal., after nine days' illness of pneumonia and complications the brave and gentle spirit of Geo. Stewart took its flight just at eventide on Wednesday, May 12, 1915. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, September 7, 1850 second son of Charles Stewart, who ranks among modern Scottish poets. His mother's family name was Wilson. His parents settled in Galt, Ontario, Canada, when George was a young lad, who at an early age, showed a great fondness for study. He was graduated from Galt Collegiate Institute and Toronto. university, from which institutions of learning he was many times gold medalist. One can fancy his parents pointing with loving pride to "Geordie's books," like some of the interesting characters in Ian Maclaren's writings.
After his college days, Mr. Stewart entered the Grand Trunk railroad offices in Montreal. While living in Montreal. as a member of the St. George's snow shoe club, on one of their tramps round the mountain, he and a friend lost their way in a storm. and were nearly frozen to death. Likely the terrible exposure in that blizzard was the beginning of the brave fight for life, which might have ended years ago, but for his wonderful Scotch grit!
In subsequent years Mr. Stewart was traffic manager for the Grand Trunk in Chicago. About 23 years, ago he came to California on a stretcher and settled in the north end of Perris valley 22 years ago. He has been the station agent at both Alessandro and Val Verde and was postmaster for many years at Alessandro. Had his health not broken. George Stewart had a great future before him as a railroad manager. He was married in Montreal to Charlotte Gibson of London. England who predeceased him January 8. 1906 Mr. Stewart leaves a brother. Charles F. and family in Galt. Ontario and a brother. John and family, in Detroit. Funeral services were held in Riverside Cal., on Friday May 14th, Rev. D. Milton C. Dotten officiating. Mrs. Arthur L. Brown sang mose sympathically "Nearer My God To Thee."
The interment was in Evergreen cemetery, Riverside.
