On Thanksgiving, a family remembers one of their own, killed 100 years ago

LINWOOD The Hain family has gathered in this village, surrounded by rolling hills and Mennonite farms, for Thanksgiving every year since 1927.

Between 30 and 35 people, some from as far as California and England, will meet Saturday at the home of Dr. Irene Hain, a retired gynecologist and obstetrician.

They'll enjoy a traditional meal of turkey and mashed potatoes, locally made sausage, mashed turnip, pickled beets and of course pumpkin and "schnitz" (apple) pie for dessert....

A silence that has been kept for a century is to be broken.

The family will speak in detail for the first time about Irene's uncle, Lance-Cpl. Alexander Hain, who served in the First World War and was killed October 8, 1916.

Alex was a signaller, who at age 22 enlisted with the 58th Canadian Infantry Battalion of the Canadian overseas expeditionary force.

He was sent to Belgium and France, where he sent telephone messages to and from the front.

On the last day of his young life, at the Battle of Ancre Heights during the final months of the Battle of the Somme, Alex stepped out of a German dugout that had been captured.

      A shrapnel shell exploded overhead.

He died "five minutes later, in the arms of his comrades," said Alex's great-nephew, Allister Hain, who will speak about him Saturday.

Alex was one of five brothers, three of whom went to war in Europe. Norman was killed by a German shell in 1918.

Gordon was studying medicine and served as a surgeon aboard the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Whitley.

He survived the war and witnessed the German fleet surrender in the North Sea. He described the sight as "positively wonderful" in a letter home.

Gordon returned to Canada, finished his studies, and started a medical practice in Linwood. Irene, his daughter, became a physician too and still lives in the family home....
