    • THOMAS RUTHERFORD, WINNIPEG PIONEER, DIED ON SATURDAY

Had Been Resident of City For Forty Years and a Veteran Captain of Industry,.

Thomas Rutherford a member of the well known firm of Brown and Rutherford pioneers in the business in Winnipeg died Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock from heart trouble, following a painful attack of astham extending over several years, through the long period of which he had patient sufferer, Mr. Rutherford died at his residence Buchanan street, surrounded by the immediate members a his family and a number of relatives conscious to the last. The funenral will take place this afternoon from the family residence No. 1. Buchanan street to Brookside cemetery. A service will be held at the house at 4 o'clock, to be conducted by Rev, Dr. Cooke, pastor of Zion church; the church of thirty years.

The late Mr. Rutherford was one of the captains of Industry in Winnipeg, and besIdes being prominent in the industrial life of the city, had the distinction of being a pioneer in the business of this country. With his partner, Alexander Brown, he came to Fort Garry in 1872, making the journey from the end of the railway at Breckenridge, Minn., In a small row boat by way of the Red river. Not carrying much of an outfit of provisions the two voyageurs, then young men, subsisted on game killed by the unerring weapon of Mr. Brown. On arriving Fort Garry they at once established a lumber and planing mill, the first in the country. This mill stood un the site now occupied by Ashdown's wholesale warehouse on Bannatyne avenue east, until1882, when the firm built a new and larger mill on the river bank at Point Douglas close to Louise bridge, but which was destroyed by fire12 years ago. Only a few weeks ago the firms plant was again wiped out by fire, but Is again being rebuilt on a larger scale. At the. time of the recent fire Mr. Rutherford was forced out of home, his residence being attacked. by the flames.

In the 70's Mr. Rutherford with Mr. Brown. built a sawmill at Fisher river, Lake Winnipeg, and operated It for a number of years. At that time, labor was scarce, and Indians had to be employed. Mr. Rutherford always said that the aborigines were capable workmen, and he had a higher regard for Poor Lo than some people have. In those days the trip from Winnipeg to the Lake was made by team over the ice, and was on arduous journey. Mr. Rutherford up to a months ago, had his share in the active work of the firm's prosperous business. He frequently had in earlier years been urged to accept nomination for public offices, but having no taste for aldermanic or political life, he steadfastly declined all such proffers. He built the First Knox church in the city, and had qualities of heart and mind that make him a man to be loved and admired. His old home was in Glenmorris district in Ontario, and old Scotch settlement near where he was born 77 years argue

The surviving members of the family besldes the widow, are; Will, assistant city controller; Fred a member of the firm Brown and Rutherford, and Miss Rutherford, James D. Conklin, is a brother-in-law; Rutherford, of the city waterworks department, is a nephew, and George Aulesbrook, city manager of the Rat Portage Lumber company, is a cousin of the late Mr. Rutherford.
