- Passages: Annie Clemmer rose above multiple tragedies
Annie Clemmer of Waterloo, born: Sept. 16, 1917 in Waterloo, died: Oct. 29, 2017 of age related illness
Annie Clemmer's personal losses, the death of three babies and her husband, might have destroyed many people but the spirited little Annie managed to live 100 years and fill every moment with joy and activity.
So much death did have an effect, said Shirley Dueck, one of two surviving daughters. The woman who once wore stylish clothing adopted a more frugal lifestyle, spending almost no money on herself. Annie knew what was important in life and it wasn't wearing expensive dresses.
"I think she just lost interest after dad died young and losing three children," said Shirley. "She really was a loner."
Annie was born in Waterloo, one of nine siblings. Her parents had been ethnic Germans living in Poland before coming to Canada with their young family. Shirley and her sister Dianne Borch, said their mom was never really close to her siblings who have all since died.
Annie graduated from Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate with a three-year business diploma and in her 20s she spent a year staying with extended family in Montana.
As a young single woman Annie was restless, working in places such as Crystal Beach, Westmount Golf Club, the Walper Hotel, Canada Cabinets, The Granite Club and Seagram's Distillery.
Her daughters said Annie was always looking to earn more money and learn new skills. Consequently she changed jobs. A lot.
The pretty and petite Annie met Nathan Clemmer at a dance. Nathan loved to burn up the dance floor as well as smoke and have a few drinks, though his family background hardly prepared him for the life of party guy.
Nathan came from an old order Mennonites and along with his brothers, they all left home, turning away from their parents' simple way of life....
