- BELL, HARMON
Mr. Bell, age 59, lost his life when an outboard motor boat turned over Saturday evening about 5: 45, June 22, 1957 at Puslinch Lake. Four other occupants of the boat, two of whom were from Preston, managed to cling to the overturned craft until assistance came. Mr. Bell was employed as a farmhand at the nearby farm of Miss Mary McCormick, R. R. #2, Puslinch since 1941. A native of Ireland, he was single and had no relatives in this country. The group was crossing from the mainland to go for a swim at the big island in the centre of the lake. The mishap occurred in deep water, as they were approaching the island. All in the boat were thrown into the water, when it capsized and encountered difficulty in coming to the surface and clinging to the overturned craft. Two members of the Preston Fire Department, occupants of another boat nearby witnessed the plight and came to their aid, giving artificial respiration to Mr. Bell. He was in the water about five minutes and it is thought that he struck his head, either when he was thrown out or in coming up underneath it. Hespeler Fire Department answered the call for a resuscitator and the effort was carried on for some time at the scene. He was then removed to the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead at 7: 45. Mr. Bell was a member of the Anglican Church and the Masonic and Orange Lodges. He is survived by two brothers in Ireland. Funeral service at the Stager Funeral Home on Galt St. in Hespeler on Tuesday at 2: 30. Rev. J. M. Butler of Hespeler United Church officiated. Pallbearers: Ted Sear, Ken Murray, Tom Foss, Walter Kelusky, Wesley Kerns and Joe Morden. Interment was in Killean Cemetery.
