Barb Quickfall, 74, died April 9, 2015 at Grand River Community Health Centre in Kitchener. Born June 8, 1940 in Kitchener to David "Warren" & Kathleen "Kay" Jennie (Lough) Boettger. Loving wife of Herbert Arthur Quickfall for 52 years. Cherished mother of Heather & John Leffler, Rick Quickfall, Phil Quickfall & Heather Godwin. Much loved Grandmother of Sarah and Lisa Leffler, Helen (Leffler) & Robert Smith, Max and Emma Quickfall, and Great Grandma to John Smith. Sister to Joyce & Bob Winegar, June & Dave Cunningham, and Bonnie & Greg Koehn, sister-in-law to Edith & Murray Shantz, and Alice (Quickfall) & Cam Clair. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, brother David Boettger, sister-in-law Ruth (Quickfall) & Hugh Craig. Barb will be missed by her nieces, nephews, cousins, honorary grandchildren, friends and neighbours. Barb loved the family farm on Kraft Drive, where she made a welcoming home for her family and countless guests. Herb and Barb hosted many youth through the Lions and other youth exchange programs. They made friends across Canada and around the world, accepting invitations to visit many of them in their homes. Her love of history, family and community, led Barb to write The Boettger Banner and a history of her father's family, and to edit The Bridgeport News for over 30 years. As an avid reader and a member of the Waterloo Historical Society and Kitchener-Waterloo Field Naturalists, she continued to learn throughout her life. Mom loved to share what she learned with others, through discussion, newspaper clippings, pioneer nights, Mission and Service events and holiday parties. Barb loved bird watching, walking, camping and learning about nature; interests she shared with her family and friends and as a Brownie leader, Beaver leader and cook at Everton Cub Camp. Being informed and wanting to make difference, she and Herb were active members of the Liberal Party. Barb took censuses and worked in many elections, leading to her being appointed as the returning officer for Waterloo Wellington in 1997 and 2000. Her strong faith and volunteerism kept her active in the EUB and then United Church. Barb's love of music led her to sing in the choir for most of her life. She volunteered in many ways at Bridgeport United Church; served on the executive of Waterloo Presbyterial, represented her church at Waterloo Presbytery, volunteered in the Presbytery Resource Centre, and was secretary of the Camp Ganadaoweh and Hamilton Conference Camp committees. Barb served as the secretary of the Bridgeport Community Association from its formation. She helped with dances, movie afternoons and a wide variety of activities and programs run by the association at the Bridgeport Community Centre. Some of the programs she enjoyed the most were tai chi, basket weaving and watercolours. After years of sketching nature and landscapes, Mom recently developed a passion for painting and shared many of her watercolours with family and friends. Barb's family will share memories with friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, April 24 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Barb's Life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 3 p.m. at the Bridgeport Community Centre, 20 Tyson Dr., Kitchener. Condolences for the family and donations to Bridgeport United Church, the Mission and Service Fund of The United Church of Canada, or your favorite charity may be arranged through the funeral home www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
