      ________________

Mrs. James Cowan - this very old resident of North Dumfries died on Sunday last, and was attended to her last resting place on Tuesday by an immense concourse of old friends. Last February Mrs. Cowan met with an accident whereby she has since been confined to her bed a great sufferer. At her advanced age - she was in her 92nd year - it was hopeless to look for her recovery and all that was left for her family and friends was to smooth the few days remaining to her by loving attention. With her husband, who died in 1867 - genial James Cowan, a friend of all, and known to almost every resident of Dumfries and Galt, and ever ready with cheerful deeds to encourage the down hearted and assist the unfortunate - the deceased lady came from the Vale of Yarrow in 1829, and settling on the homestead now occupied by her son, Mr. Thomas Cowan, took up the life of a Canadian pioneer. It is but a repetition to describe the trials of their life. How well they performed their part is amply evidenced by the success which attended their efforts. Nine children were born to them, five sons and four daughters. Of the sons, four, viz.: Mr. George Cowan, living a little west of the homestead, Mr. Thomas Cowan, on the homestead, Mr. William Cowan, of North Dumfries, and Mr. James Cowan, of Guelph township, certainly survive, while the fifth son, Mr. John Cowan, left this section many years ago - so long ago as scarcely to be remembered here, and has not been heard from for years. Three daughters are dead, and the fourth is Mrs. John Knox, of Wroxeter village. One or two more of the old, old folk are left with us, Mrs. George Barrie and Mrs. P?r. When they pass away the link between the early days and the present will be several, and of the actual participants none will be left.
