  • Notes
    • Mrs. J. W. Maus Passes - The community was saddened Sunday evening by the death in Willett Hospital, Paris, of Mrs. Jairus W. Maus, one of the district's most esteemed citizens. The former Elizabeth Ann Baxter, she was born on the 10th concession of Blenheim on the farm now owned by her brother, James Baxter. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baxter, one of the township's prominent names. Since her marriage in 1917, she had resided on Fairview Farm, south of this village on the Ayr-Paris road. A devoted wife and mother, her interest centred in her home and family. Her kindly and cheerful disposition won her many friends throughout the community, and she was noted for her hospitality on the many occasions she opened her home for community gatherings. Mrs. Maus was a faithful member of Knox United Church and active in church work. She was a life member of the Kate M. Thomson Auxiliary, WMS, and in social life was a valued member of the Blenheim-Dumfries Farm Women's Club. Her passing will be keenly felt by these organizations. Surviving, besides her husband, are four sons, Dr. John, Windsor; Douglas and Hugh, South Dumfries, and Donald of Kincardine; four daughters, Elizabeth, Reg.N., Port Colborne; Agnes (Mrs. Ian Thomson), Edmonton; Jean (Mrs. Duncan McGugan), Strathroy, and Margaret (Mrs. A. W. Bond), Smithville; three sisters, Misses Isabelle and Margaret Baxter, Ayr, and Mrs. John T. Kennedy, South Dumfries, and two brothers, Richard and James Baxter, Blenheim Township. Nineteen grandchildren also survive. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Frances Ann, in 1939. A sister, Mrs. McKenzie Edgar (Mary) and a brother, Hugh Baxter, died some years ago

      The Funeral

The largely attended funeral service was held at her late residence this (Wednesday) afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. D. Thompson of Knox United Church. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Andrew C. Hall, David Hall, Dr. Gordon Hall, William Cowan, William McRuer and Alex McRae. The flower-bearers were neighbors and friends.
