Notes |
- DOROTHY MARIE ELLIOTT 1907 - 2009
Passed away at the Sunshine Centre of Luther Village, Waterloo, on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the age of 102 years. Predeceased by her parents, Amsey and Maggie (nee Groff) Schweitzer; sisters, Vera and Olive; brother, Wilfred and wife Marion and nephew, Paul Schweitzer. Survived by special niece, Shirley Schweitzer; best loved cousin, Mary Margaret Reist and many wonderful friends. Especially cared for by Ruby Bennett, Mary Margaret Reist, Shirley Schweitzer and Judy Weldon. Dorothy was a member of First United Church, Waterloo and former member of Bloomingdale United Church where she played the organ and piano for over eighty years, starting to play for Sunday School at age 12. She sang and played piano in early radio broadcasts, accompanied various singers and choirs and played for many weddings and Sunday afternoon sing-alongs. Dorothy volunteered at the Sunnyside home for 25 years playing the piano for birthday parties and special functions. Dorothy lived a full and rich life, a life overflowing with a vitality and energy all her own. She supported musicians by providing scholarships to students in the music programs at Wilfrid Laurier University and KW Youth Orchestra. She supported the KW Symphony for over fifty years, St. Paul's College (UW), the Renaissance Singers and many other worthwhile causes that were close to her heart. Dorothy's fine artworks are displayed throughout the community; the Eby Coat of Arms (hooked) in the Eby Room at the Kitchener Library; the Brubacher Coat of Arms (hooked) in the Brubacher Museum at the University of Waterloo and the Last Supper (needle-point) in the Chapel of St. Paul's United College. Dorothy was made a life member of the Kitchener Horticultural Society for her many contributions to the Rockway Gardens planting trees, supplying benches and helping restore the fountains. She held an honorary life pass to Doon Pioneer Village (Doon Heritage Crossroads). At Dorothy's request cremation has taken place with interment at Memory Garden's, Breslau. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Church, 16 William Street, Waterloo with Rev. Richard Hawley officiating. Donations may be made to the First United Church Millennium Fund or the Canadian Bible Society by contacting the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home at 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com
