    • Walkerton Hotelman, C. P. Schmalz Dies

      Charles Phillip Schmalz, 79; well - known Walkerton hotelman, died March 4 in Bruce County Hospital here after a lengthy illness. Born Aug. 23, 1885, in Maryhill, he was a son of the late Englebert Schmalz and Anna Buhlman.

      Mr. Schmalz was in the hotel business for 60 years, operating the Hartley House here from 1939. Prior to that he operated hotels in Breslau, Kitchener, Preston and Brantford. He was a sports enthusiasts and former executive member of hockey and ball teams here. He was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church.

      Surviving are his wife the former Alice Reinhart whom he married in 1914; four sons, Lorne and Clarence of Walkerton, Carl of Brantford and Donald of Cooksville; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Borland San Carlos, Cal., Mrs. James (Margaret) Balfour of Mt. Royal, Quebec, Mrs. Dayid (Rita) Silk of Mildmay and Mrs. Louis (Bernice) Schnurr of Walkerton.

      Also four brothers, Alfred of Preston and Leo, William and Gordon of Kitchener, five sisters, Mrs. Annie Broham of Peakshill, N.Y., Mrs. Rose Moody of Kitchener, Mrs. Edna Beneteau of Detroit, Mrs. Eleanor Bickers of Oakville and Mrs. Minette Dumart of Kitchener, 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Melvin (Marilyn) Gateman is one grandchild, and the great grandchildren are Valerie and Blaire Gateman, all of Hanover.

      The body rested at the Tanner and Pearson Funeral Home in Walkerton. Dean C. B. Meyer conducted requiem high mass March 8 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Temporary entombment was in Walkerton Cemetery Chapel. People from all over Ontario and the United States attended the funeral.
