  • Notes
    • MARY T. (MOLLIE) PRINCE 1914 - 2006 On Monday, August 21, 2006, Mollie died at the age of 92 years, following a long and "maddening" illness - her words. Mollie died at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital. She was born on June 22, 1914 in Leeds, England, the elder child of Ben and Clarissa Prince. Her younger sister Betty died in New Zealand in 1980. Mollie's family migrated to Canada in 1927 and settled at Stanstead, Quebec, where she graduated from the Bugbee Business School. She joined the WRENS of the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was posted to the dockyards of Halifax and later to an administration job in London, England. Following the war she entered the Canadian Department of External Affairs and later the British Foreign Service, spending much of her career in diplomatic offices in Holland, Australia and New Zealand. In 1977 Mollie came to Kitchener to retire but she remained busy. She was a volunteer at the KPL and often part of the audience at the Centre in the Square. Until a day or two before her final illness, she was a regular swimmer in her apartment's pool, and enthusiastic line-dancer, a loyal member of the Happy Hoofers, an accomplished pianist and singer with the Merry Songsters and a member of several group travel organizations that took her to many parts of the world, including Iceland and The Baltic Sea in her 91st year. Throughout her long life, Mollie kept a vigorous interest in pubic affairs and enjoyed particularly the CBC and lectures at K-W Third Age Learning. Her many friends will remember Mollie as a determined and independent lady. Nowhere was this more evident than on Sunday mornings when, despite her failing eyesight and sometimes difficult weather, she confidently set off from Queen Street to walk to Water Street and her friends at the Anglican Church of St. John the Evangelist. Had she been able, Mollie would have liked to thank the care-givers of the hospital, her numerous visitors, and particularly Yvonne Boisvert for their concern and assistance over the past months. At Mollie's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being arranged for a day in early September. The complete arrangements will be published in The Record at a later date or may be obtained through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com In living memory of Mollie, a tree will be planted through The Trees for Learning Program by the funeral home.
