- GEORGE H. ASHTON
A resident of Galt, for the past 55 years, George Harold Ashton of 67 Stanley Street, died Saturday, at South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, in his 75 year. Born at Beverly, Yorkshire England, on April 19, 1890, he was the son of the late John Ashton and Annie Lowthrope Ashton. Mr. Ashton came to Galt from England, in 1910. He retired in 1958 with 45 years service with Babcock-Wilcox and Goldie McCulloch Company. A veteran of World War One, Mr. Ashton enlisted with the 71st Battalion and transferred while overseas to the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders. The late Mr. Ashton was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and a member of The Sons of England Lodge. Surviving are his wife the former Clara Elvin; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Audrey) Mercer, of Galt; two sons, John of Galt and Corporal Harold Ashton, RCE, London and three grandchildren. Also surviving are a niece, Mrs. Audrey White of Galt and three nephews, (two of whom are in England); the third, Ronald Scutcher lives in Guelph. A sister predeceased. Resting at the funeral home of Coutts and Son, 96 St. Andrews Street, for funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Mount View Cemetery.
