  • Notes
    • Dr. Charles Rand, 95, didn't serve overseas in the Second World War. He asked to go. But the air force said the young doctor was needed more in Canada, where he examined the medical fitness of recruits.

It bothered him then. But it also helped shape his perspective, letting him reflect on the war in his cerebral way and grow into his pacifism.

Rand's war was not harrowing. He never spoke much about it. But he sees value in others understanding a full picture that includes servicemen who never left Canada. There were many of them.

"I think that all young people should realize the real costs of warfare," he says.

      __________________________

RAND, Charles Gordon 1917 - 2014 Charles was a lifelong learner. Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, he grew up in Moncton, NB, the son of Ivan Cleveland and Iredell Rand. He excelled at studies in high school (Provincial Honour Roll) and at Mt. Alison University (Cum Laude '38) where he met his beloved wife Margaret Colby (1918 - 2002). They had three children, Peter (Pat Hertzberger), Penny (Ken Cressman) and Stephen (Paula Fraser) who were loved and directed toward intellectual pursuit and a love of the arts. Postgraduate studies led to a Medical degree from McGill ('42) and a specialty in Internal Medicine ('50) after a four-year service in the RCAF and research in Seattle. His medical career at the Lockwood Clinic in Toronto ('50 - '53) and in private practice in Kitchener ('53-'61) prepared him for contributions to the federal Ministry of Health ('61-'68) and a Professorship in Epidemiology at the University of Western Ontario ('68-'82). Always in the pursuit of new and challenging domains. All this work was flavoured with working trips to the Arctic, Thailand, Lesotho and Sierra Leone and explorations of European culture. His gentlemanly nature endeared him to his ten grand-children and nineteen great-grandchildren and all those whom he met. He will be much missed but will remain an enduring memory to many. A celebration of his life will be held at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home , 621 King St. W., Kitchener, on Saturday, May 10th at 1: 30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your own choice or to the KW Chamber Music Society, 57 Young St. W., Waterloo ON N2L 2Z4.
