  • Notes
    • William Bock,

WIlliam Bock of Spring Bay, second son of the late Mr. and Mrs.Benjamin Bock, passed away on July 17th after a long illness borne with much patience and Christian resignation.

Mr. Bock was born in the county of Waterloo in Dec. 1856 and was in his sixty-third year. A few years later they went to Bruce then a tract just being settled. They located near the village of Carlsrhue. About the year 1877 they came to Manitoulin. Mr. Bock Sr. had been on the Island the previous year. Before removing his family he bought the farm on Spring Bay containing a small clearing from its previous owner, Mr. W.Pattison of Providence Bay. There were two portages to make after landing at Manitowaning and two lakes to traverse. The first portage led from Manitowaning to Van Zant's Landing, then proceeding over Manitou Lake to Lehman's Landing the second portage was encountered extending from the point to Lake Mindemoya. While the family and supplies were being conveyed in this manner the three eldest boys, Henry, William and Abraham brought the stock in by way of the Government Road then in a very crude condition.

On the homestead on which the family settled Mr. Wm. Bock breathed his last. The many and trying experiences of pioneer life he knew welland frequently during his lingering illness he related some of them.

Under the preaching of Rev. W. Schroeder, a Mennonite minister hewas converted to God, thirty-two years ago, since which time he has lived a consistend Christian life being a member of the Spring BayMennonite Church and its secretary treasurer until ill health prevented his further service.

Twenty-four years ago he married Miss Sarah J. Dowsett who survives him. He also leaves one son, Stanley who resides at home.

The funeral was conducted by his pastor Rev. W.H. Yates and interment took place at Providence Bay cemetery. On the following Sunday a memorial service was held in the Mennonite Church.
