    Reitzel-Grierson
    • This distinctive "Craftsman Style" home was erected by Edward Reitzel in 1925 on Victoria Street (Avondale Ave.). Mr. Reitzel hired architect C.P. Mueller to design the house and the construction work was done by Reitzel Bros. In 1978 Charles Grierson purchased the home from the Reitzel Estate.
The Reitzel family contributed significantly to the development of Waterloo. The Reitzel family ancestors came form the Province of Lorraine in Europe. Later decendents lived in the nearby village of St. Clements. In the early 1900s Clemens Reitzel along with brothers Eugene and Frank began the Reitzel Bros. Construction Company. They built many homes in the old Westmount area during the 1920s and 30s. They also manufactured furniture from 1913-1941 on the site of the Bechtel Brickyard on Allen Street West.

The "Craftsman Style" of architecture originated in England as the "Arts and Crafts Style" and was being copied here in Canada in the 1920s. This style was based on structural clarity and structural details such as: exposed rafter ends; walls of cut fieldstone mortared from behind; rooflines with many shingle-faced open gables; verandahs with fieldstone walls and heavy wooden posts and multi-paned windows arranged in groups.
The designation includes the four facades of the home and the entire roof line.1a
