- Gordon Victor Ambrose
Passed away peacefully in Kitchener, Ontario on November 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. Gordon was born in London, Ontario on March 29, 1933. Beloved husband of Rosemary Ann Ambrose (nee Willard) who predeceased him in October 2022. They are now reunited. Dearly loved and missed by his children Catherine Ambrose, Joan Schlotzhauer (Craig), and Robert Ambrose (Linda), and his grandchildren Gwendolyn Blazeichuk (Eddie), Meredith Teller (Chad), Keith Schlotzhauer (Ashleigh), and Meghan Harper (Garnet, predeceased). He will be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren Xavier and Amelia Blazeichuk; Jaedyn, Benjamin and Jaxon Teller; Blake (predeceased) and Julianne Schlotzhauer; and Avah, Elyanah, Yarah, Nyah and Judah Harper. Gordon was predeceased by his parents Marjorie Willis Ambrose (1989) and Victor Edwin Ambrose (1992), and his brother-in-law Fred Ursel (2010). He is survived by his younger sister Patricia Ursel. Gordon spent his formative years growing up in the Maritimes, living in Saint John and Fredericton, New Brunswick and Oxford, Nova Scotia before moving back to London, Ontario in 1946 by rail, instilling a life-long love of railroads and model trains. He had many fond memories of his grandparents T.A. and Mary Willis, and Fred and Annie Ambrose who lived in London and Hamilton respectively. Following high school at H.B. Beal Secondary, Gordon began working at Bell Canada in London in 1951. After receiving specialized training in Kitchener, he transferred to the Bell office in Guelph to work as a business account representative. It was there that he met Rosemary, and they had their first 'date' when he drove her to a branch office in Rockton. Gordon and Rosemary were married on September 10, 1955 in Galt and resided there for several years. He worked at the Willard Furniture Store until it was sold to Eaton's in 1960. Gordon worked for Eaton's in office management first in Galt and then in Kitchener before beginning work at the University of Waterloo in 1966. Gordon worked there for 28 years, first as Office Manager, then Assistant Registrar and finally Manager of Correspondence Student Services before retiring in 1994. Upon moving to Kitchener in 1963, Gordon and Rosemary became lifelong members of St. James'- Rosemount United Church. Gordon had an adventurous spirit and loved the outdoors. He was a King Scout and a member of a Scout Troop in London, attending the Canadian Jamboree in Ottawa in 1950 and the World Jamboree at Valley Forge in 1951. He remained active in Scouting into the 1970s. His love of the outdoors, imparted and shared with Rosemary, led to many family camping adventures across North America, life at their Wiarton cottage and trips abroad to England. An Alaskan cruise took Gordon and Rosemary to the cusp of the Klondike gold route from Skagway. This spirit of adventure is carried on in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gordon's interests were many and varied. Curious by nature and highly skilled, Gordon learned his woodworking craft in high school and parlayed this into many lovingly crafted furniture projects over his lifetime. His children and grandchildren are the fortunate recipients of the works of his hands. He was an avid photographer, evidenced by the family's wonderful photographic record, and contributed to the many genealogy adventures shared with Rosemary. Gordon continued to keep pace with new technology throughout his life and used it in recent years to stay connected with family and friends. Gordon's family was his pride and joy, and he loved them dearly. He gave of himself to family and to others around him and was generous with his time and talents. He will be greatly missed by his family and so many others with whom he crossed paths at church, places of work, volunteer organizations, Luther Village Sunshine Centre, and Grand River Hospital. He had a special quality and interest in people that put them first and made them feel valued. The family is most grateful for the care and support that Gordon received at Grand River Hospital, including the renal team and in particular Dr. Rosenstein with whom he developed a friendship over the course of his many years in the Dialysis Clinic. Thank you also to Dr. Van Alstine, nurses Michelle, John, Desiree and Nicole, and PSWs Chi-vaughn and Gwen. Your kindness and compassionate care will not be forgotten. Family will receive relatives and friends to celebrate Gordon's life on December 4, 2024 from 4:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests donations be made to Grand River Hospital Foundation -Kidney Care or to St. Mary's General Hospital - Regional Cardiac Care Centre.
