- DAVID H. BRAKE, 72, DIES NEAR FREMONT
Ex- Legislator Had Been Active in Farm and Political Circles.
Fremont - David H. Brake, 72. dominant figure in Newaygo county agricultural and political circles for many years, died Thursday at his farm home near Fremont.
First elected to the state house of representatives in November, 1922. Brake served four consecutive terms as a Republican. His fruit farm is one of the finest in western Michigan.
Born in Waterloo county, Ontario, he came to Kent county his parents at the age of 3 and settled at Caledonia. Brake was educated in the rural grade schools, Caledonia High school and took a course at Swensberg's Business college in Grand Rapids. He kept books for a Caledonia firm several years.
July 28. 1889, he married Miss Bertha Marcia Hale of Caledonia and in 1898 moved to Dayton township, Newaygo county. Brake immediately became identified with farming and politics.
He was one of the organizers of the Newaygo County Farm Bureau, of which he served as president and director many years. Also instrumental in forming the Fremont Co-operative Produce Co. 25 years ago, Brake had been that body's only president. He served on his district school board 16 years and was Dayton township supervisor six times. The offices of town clerk and treasurer also were held by him.
Brake was affiliated with the Masonic and Maccabee orders and for many years was master and treasurer of the Fremont Grange, also serving as master of the county Pomona Grange. He held office in the county Gleaner organization.
Surviving are the widow, two sons, State Senator D. Hale Brake of Stanton and Donald of Alma; two daughters, Mrs. Bernice Cummings of Cleveland, Ohio. and Mrs. Lillian Curtis of Royal Oak; two brothers, John of Clarksville and Menno of Newport Ritchie, Fla., and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Good of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Ida LivIngston of Clarksville and Mrs. Jennie Tasker of Lake Odessa.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at the home, with burial in Doud cemetery near Fremont.
