      W. G. Johnson Dies Suddenly At Home

William George Johnson, highly-respected resident of Hespeler for more than 60 years, who was active in many phases of municipal endeavor, died suddenly at his home, 64 Kribs St., on Friday morning. He was 85. His service to the community was recognized in 1969 when the municipal swimming pool was named the W. G. Johnson swimming pool, marking the acquisition of a long-sought Hespeler recreational facility and perpetuating his name. A veteran member of the Hespeler council, with 21 years of service, he was a councillor from, 1950 to 1958 and from 1959 to 1968 served as deputy-reeve. Born in Stoney Stratford, England, the deceased came to Canada in 1902. Actively interested in all phases of municipal endeavor the late Mr. Johnson was a past president of the Hespeler branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a veteran of World War 1, having served in the medical corps overseas. A past master of New Hope Masonic Lodge, he was also a pst pesident of the Hespeler Horticultural Society. Deceased was a staunch advocate of the Senior Citizens' Lounge on Queen St. And was a member of the committee which administered this facility. A former employee of Hespeler Furniture and Dominion Woollens and Worsteds, he retired in 1958, but continued actively engaged and interested in affairs of the community. Mayor G. E. Wake remembers that Mr. Johnson was "noted for his work as chairman of the waterworks committee for a considerable time. "He was also somewhat famous for being the only dissenter to Daylight Savings Time," Mayor Wake said. "Every year he was the only one who voted against it." Reeve Brende Vries remembers taking a county council bus trip to Expo 67 with Mr. Johnson, who set a pace at the fair that others were hard put to keep up with. Mr. Johnson was an adherent of the Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Albertha Howlett; also by two sons. Douglas and Russell, both of Hespeler and six grandchildren. He will be resting from Sunday noon, at Nelson’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted, Monday, May 29, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hespeler cemetery. There will also be memorial services by the Hespeler Legion at 7 p.m., Sunday and by the Masons at 7: 30 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
