- BAST, ELMER, son of Jacob and Kathryn (Spenler) Bast, was born in Wellesley, Ont., July 6, 1909; died instantly at his home, following a coronary while grinding feed, Sept. 26, 1968; aged 59 y. 2 m. 20 d. On May 14, 1931, he married Violet Gingerich, who survived him 16 days. Surviving are 4 sons (Robert, Lawson, Kenneth, and Durwood), 3 daughters (Betty--Mrs. Earle Widrick, Mary Jane--Mrs. John L. Stoffer, and Marjorie--Mrs. Warren Weidner), 14 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Norman and Emanuel), 2 sisters (Emma--Mrs. Michael Bender and Lydian--Mrs Jack Walsh). He was a member of the Croghan Church, where funeral services were held with Richard Zehr and Andrew Gingerich officiating.

Elmer Bast Dies at 59
BLACK RIVER - Elmer Bast, 59, of Black River, R.D. 1, a farmer, died unexpectedly at his home Thursday at 13:20 p.m., following a coronary, while unloading grain from a truck at his farm.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Croghan Conservative Mennonite church with Rev. Andrew Gingerich, pastor, Woodville Mennonite church, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the family home at their convenience.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Violet Gingerich Bast, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Earl (Betty) Widrick, Mannsville, R.D., Mrs. John (Mary Jane) Stoffer, Ohio and Mrs. Warren (Marjorie) Wied- ner, New Jersey; four sons, Robert, Lawson and Kenneth, all of Watertown, R.D. 4 and Durwood, Lancaster, Pa; two brothers, Norman, Lowville, and Emmanuel, Kitchener, Ont.; and 14 grandchildren.
Born July 6, 1909, at Kitchener, Ont., a son of Jacob and Kathryn Spenler Bast, he came to the United States in 1928 and married Miss Violet Gingerich May 14, 1931, at Martinsburg.
The couple operated farms at Beaches Bridge and on Route 37 before moving to their present farm three years ago.
He was a member of the Croghan Conservative Mennonite church.
