Elmer was born in Wellesley township on February 2, 1911, the first born of the late Daniel S. Erb and the late Nancy Gerber. After a short time in business as co-owner of Millbank Flour, Feed and Seed, Elmer and Vera farmed in Wellesley Township for twenty-five years. Elmer was a member of Crosshill Mennonite Church and actively contributed to church life as a Sunday school teacher and adult superintendent. He dedicated forty years to the work of A.M Fire & Storm Aid Union, first as a Director later in the position of Secretary Treasurer.
