- MARGARET E. KEACHIE
Margaret Keachie has been described as a "big woman and not a smiling woman", and as "imposing and dour". She also appears to have been the first policewoman on the Galt Police Department. She was appointed on August 1, 1921 and received a salary of $800 per year with the same terms as a policeman except that she wasn't provided with a uniform. Her main duties involved dealing with unruly children, transporting girls to the hospital and out of town and dealing with domestic disputes. Her tenure on the Police force ended on November 30, 1927 when she was informed that she was no longer a member of the force but simply a welfare worker and that, effective December 31, 1927 all funds available to pay her salary would be exhausted and the Police Commission would not be responsible for her salary after that date.
