- Couple celebrates 70 years of harmony
Joe and Bernice Kienapple have seen it all in their 70 years of marriage
When Joe Kienapple laid eyes on Bernice at a dance in Kitchener, only one thing went through his mind.
"She's not a bad looking girl," joked Joe, about a week short of celebrating his 70th wedding anniversary with his now-wife.
It all started that fateful night, when his friend '97 who had been staying at his mother's house in Josephburg (between St. Agatha and Bamberg) '97 introduced Joe to his sister.
Five years later, the couple were married. About two years later, they moved to New Hamburg, where they purchased a home on Burns Street for $2,600.
"I didn't know it when I bought it, but it was on a floodplain," said Joe. "But, we found out pretty fast."
A little while later, Joe started a business that is still in operation today '97 Kienapple Barn Painting. His brother was in the painting and roof tarring business, but farmers suddenly decided they wanted coloured roofs.
His brother Johnny decided he didn't want to get into the roof painting business, so Joe told him, "If you won't, I will."
And, by luck, Joe stumbled upon a paint sprayer while on a trip to a scrap yard in Kitchener. Joe was unable to come up with the money to purchase the piece of equipment, so the owner of the yard said, "Take it, and pay me as you can."
And with that, Bernice's role as a housewife increased dramatically. Often, the workers that helped Joe stayed in their home in New Hamburg, creating more mouths for her to feed....
