Notes |
- Passing of S. J. Thomas - By the death on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 16, of Mr. Samuel J. Thomas, Ayr loses another long-time and highly esteemed resident. The deceased, who was in his 61st year, had been ill only about two weeks, his trouble being Bright's disease, so that his sudden death came as a shock to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a moulder by trade and for 33 years was in the employ of the John Watson Mfg. Co. in this village, and for the past 31 years held the responsible position of foreman of the department. During all these years he lost only eight weeks time, for six weeks of which period the shops were closed. Quite a number of apprentices served time under Mr. Thomas, some of whom are today holding good positions. He was the oldest of a family of ten, all of whom survive except the youngest, and his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thomas, Plattsville, are still living. His partner in life (nee Miss Eliza Snyder) and one son, Mr. Geo. H. Thomas, of the Standard Auto Co., Detroit, also survive. Deceased was a Canadian by birth, a Methodist in religion and a Reformer in politics. Of a sociable, unostentatious disposition he made many friends and few enemies. A devoted disciple of Isaac Walton, he found his greatest pleasure in angling for bass or trout and was very successful with the rod. The funeral, which took place on Saturday afternoon from his late residence, St. Andrews avenue, to the Ayr cemetery, was largely attended. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. D. H. Taylor, assisted by Revs. John Thomson and D. I. Ellison. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Chris Leiska, John Urquhart, A. Melvin, Jas. Swan, Geo. Golding and Geo. W. Cross.
