- SHANTZ, Margaret Arlene "Peggy" (nee Houston) April 13, 1928 - March 22, 2016 Peggy died peacefully on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener, at the age of 87, just a few weeks shy of her birthday. Predeceased by her husband Maurice (Moe) Shantz and brother Jack Houston. She is survived by son Jim and his wife Heather, daughter Cathy McConnell and grandchildren Michael and Leah Sonnenberg. After completing high school at KCI, Peggy graduated from Normal School (Teacher's College) in Stratford, ON. She began her teaching career in a one-room school house on Fountain Street near Breslau. She later taught at Humewood School in Toronto. She then worked as a Supply Teacher in Kitchener from 1961 to 1970. After her teaching career, Peggy delivered Meals on Wheels for 25 years, as well as driving for Care Ring and helping out in the Gift Shop at Freeport Hospital. Peggy was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She was co-founder of the Thrift Shop, choir member, church secretary for a number of years, and served a term as President of the Women's Association. Friends and family will remember her for her kindness and great sense of humour. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the compassion and care provided by the staff at Buttonworks Wing, Sunnyside Home, over the past five months. In addition, thanks to the staff at Emmanuel Village for their help and thoughtfulness during Peggy's time in their care. Peggy's family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467, from 2: 30-3: 15 p.m., followed by a memorial service to celebrate her life at 3: 30 p.m. Donations to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
