Ezra Reis Burkholder was born in Waterloo County, Canada West, on 14 November 1856. He was the son of Samuel and Eva (Reis) Burkholder. Ezra's birthplace is not known: Samuel was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came to Canada as a small child. Ezra was the fourth child in a family of six boys, which included: Joseph, Benjamin, John, Samuel, and Abraham. The Burkholders seem to have been a family in transition, rooted in a Mennonite society but associating easily with Waterloo's Evangelical Church and with Methodism in both Canada and the United States.
In September 1873, Ezra's parents and most of his brothers moved from Waterloo County, Ontario, to Marion County, Kansas. Ezra remained in Ontario to complete his education at the University of Toronto. In 1876, he travelled to Kansas to see his parents' place but returned to Canada for four more years of training, this time for the Methodist Ministry, which included two years as a probationary itinerant minister. In October 1883, suffering from ill health, Ezra left the ministry in Canada and joined his family in Kansas permanently, where he established a lumberyard, E.R. Burkholder Lumber Company, in Hillsboro. Later he acquired other yards in McPherson and Marion counties. In June 1885, Ezra married Vinnie Ream Tubbs, and together they had three children. He also involved himself in all aspects of community affairs, serving one term as county representative for Marion in the state legislature. He died in 1923, leaving a thriving business to two of his sons.
