      ______________

ORTON, HENRY was the founder of the Canadian Orton dynasty. Born in 1805 in Leicestershire, he was the son of John Orton, a physician. He was educated at Rugby, and after his medical course, worked in the London Hospitals, obtaining his membership in the Royal College of Surgeons, London. He practised at Beeton, England before leaving for Canada in 1835. He settled in Guelph, beginning his practice in 1835.

He played a leading role in the development of Guelph, being active in many aspects of municipal affairs. In the field of medicine he performed practically all the surgery in an area extending as far as Owen Sound. His four sons all entered medicine as did some of their sons.

In 1854 he moved to Hespeler where he practised for four years, latterly with his son, Henry Jr. (Harry). He returned to England for about three years and returned to Guelph where he practised with his son Richard. He retired to Fergus, where he died at the home of his son George at 64 years of age.
