Notes |
- Fred, or "Pete" as he was called by his sisters, served in the Canadian Expeditionary Over-Seas Force during World War I. He enlisted in January 1916.
The following year, on 18 Aug 1917 he was wounded in action, as a result of an enemy bomb. He was taken to a hospital in Amiens, France. He was wounded in his right buttock and hip resulting in the severing of his sciatic nerve and a dislocated femur. Shortly after he was transferred to London, England, and finally to a hospital in Toronto where in January 1920 his lower leg was amputated. He was only 23 years old.
He was finally discharged, three years after being wounded in action, in September 1920 when he was married to his first wife Annie Millar, who was born 1899 in Scotland. Together there were three children in the family: Charles born in 1919, Matthew, and William.
At some point he was married to Nan (called "wee Nan", by family). There was a child named Lucia Frances or "Lucy" born in Scotland. His sister Nan visited him in Scotland and after his death in 1948, she again visited his widow and daughter.
Fred somehow ended up in Glasgow, Scotland where he is apparently buried.
He is remembered by his family on a memorial in Winterbourne Presbyterian Cemetery.
