- In Oct. 1809 the first organized school in this Eby settlement as Berlin was then called and probably the 2nd in Waterloo was opened in a small log house near Indian Sam'l Eby residence now known as Jacob Fry's old place. Benj. Eby, Joseph Schneider, Geo. Eby, Indian Sam, Jacob Erb & others engaged one John Beatty a native of Ireland as the first teacher. Afterwards in 1813 the school was moved into Eby's meeting house where Bishop Ben. Eby taught for many winters.1a

I, John Beaty of the Township of Waterloo, Farmer…1st All my honest debts shall be paid first out of my property. 2nd I give and bequeath to my dear beloved wife Polly, four acres of my farm on either corner where ever she chooses and two cows, two beds and bedsteads, one table, two chairs, one kettle, two belly pots and frying pan, one doz[?] plates, one set knifes and forks, she to have four hundred dollars out of my property for to build her a small comfortable house on her four acres. She is to have thirty bushels of wheat and three hundred pounds of pork yearly out of the farm, and six pound of wool, as long as she remains my widow. 3rd After my decease all my stock and property is to be sold and the neat proceeds is to be divided equally among my children, except Julyan is to have one hundred dollars more than any of the rest and Thomas Cook is to have equal share with the boys - I nominate and constitute and appoint Mr Barnabas Devitt and Daniel Snyder, both of Waterloo Township, Executors of this my Last Will and Testament…
