Notes |
- One of the pioneers of the township of Puslinch, at 9 on Saturday evening, April 26, 1924, at the ripe age of 84 years. Relict of the late John Paddock, who predeceased her twenty-five years ago. She is survived by one brother, George Martin of Kitchener; seven sons, John and Frank of Oak River, Manitoba; Sidney and Alfred of Biggar, SK; William Henry of Winnipeg; Benjamin of Davidson, SK; George on the homestead; twenty-eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a life long member of the Methodist Church. Native of Exeter, Devonshire, England, she came to Canada in 1855 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Martin, settling in Puslinch on the farm now owned by Marvin Eagle. The trip from England lasted well over a month on the ocean, as they came over on a sailing vessel and they were stuck in an ice floe for some time. They landed April 18, 1855 and arrived in Puslinch on May 24 of the same year. She had a clear recollection of her early life in Canada. On one occasion, lightening came down the chimney of their home and rendered her mother unconscious for a time. The same bolt hit their barn, killing a great number of cattle. She was married in 1860 to John Paddock, who lived on the 1st concession, about 2Vi miles from her home. The Paddock family cleared 126 acres of the farm now operated by her son, George Paddock and it was here that she then made her home. In those days, the country was very unsettled and many hardships had to be endured. The country was infested with wolves and bears and both people and cattle were in danger. The grain had to be drawn to Dundas and it was there all supplies were bought. She and her husband were among the pioneers of Puslinch. She was widely known in the community, for she was noted for her good works. She passed away very suddenly, as she had been confined to bed since the previous Saturday. She had been enjoying the best of health up to Friday. Alfred Paddock of Biggar came home to attend the funeral on Fri. , May 2, at the residence of her son, George, 1st concession, Puslinch to Hespeler Cemetery. It was largely attended. Pallbearers: Alfred Paddock, George Paddock, Fred Paddock, William Paddock, Mr. Henderson and Mr. Jamieson. Rev. Ruell of Hespeler officiated.
