Notes |
- K Hettler recalls:: The youngest was my dad, Norman. All were raised on their parents' farm but only dad wanted to pursue agriculture as a career and I believe he was the only one who went to college/university. (I don't know what training Eileen had.) He worked in the animal barns at Guelph (Ontario Agricultural College) to help pay his tuition. After the second world war broke out, he felt he should enlist even though Mennonites are pacifists, but didn't join until 1942 or 43. Married my mom (Gladys Emma Perschbacher) July 1943 and she followed him across Canada to a couple of military bases for training but then he went overseas to England. Joan was born December 1944 and I know Dad didn't see her until she was 8 months' old, once the war was over. He was a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Dad got hired with the Canada Malting Company in Toronto but got moved to Montreal sometime before I was born October 1947. They moved to Calgary, AB in 1950 when he got the job as Malster & then Plant Superintendent for the C.M. company there. They were both members of the United Church all their lives and sang in the choir (Mom also was fill-in organist) until their 70's I think.
