- BECKER, HENRY
Death of an Old Resident of Crieff
The intelligence has reached us of the death of Mr. Becker, merchant of Crieff in Puslinch, at about 5 o'clock on Wednesday morning, [March 12, 1890], after a long illness, beginning in August 1889. He was in his 68th year. One of the best known and most highly respected residents in the neighbourhood of Crieff. He was born in the town of Herford, Westphalia, a province of Prussia. In the troublesome times of 1848 in Germany, he went to the front and served in the war. He came to Canada in 1854, the year of the cholera and landed in Hamilton, where he remained for about four years, from thence removing to Crieff, where he bought out the business of Thomas Buckley, who kept a general grocery store in the premises owned by Donald McIntyre. Messrs. Allan and Hugh Stewart, since dead, were in business at the same time. In 1873, all the buildings were destroyed by fire but owing to the kindness of the people of the vicinity, who turned out readily with their teams and drew the building materials upon the ground, everything was restored within a few months. As will be seen by the above, Mr. Becker was one of the early residents, few of whom now remain, who came when the country was new and who had seen the woods disappear, good houses and barns rise, roads opened up and railways introduced, where there was nothing but a wilderness of forest, governed by the Indian and wild beasts. For about twenty years, he has carried on a store in the village and was widely known and respected throughout the township. Mr. Becker was a pronounced Reformer and took an active part in all political contests. He leaves five sons and one daughter, Mrs. James Bond of Galt. His funeral took place at 2 on Saturday conducted by Mr. Ironside of Schaw.
