Notes |
- In 1887, James Stark erected 12 Northumberland Street, Ayr, as a combined grocery store and residential apartment. Two years ago [2012], Michael Clifton and Mark Kok purchased the building and hired John Dorey, principal of R.J. Construction Ventures Inc., to restore it to its former glory for the legal offices of Clifton Kok LLP. Although the building had suffered considerable structural damage over the years, the renovation retained three of the four original brick walls, the original roof structure, and the original high ceilings. While the front fa?ade did not survive, its replacement replicated the original design wherever possible, following the building's original blueprints. Now, 12 Northumberland Street looks more like Stark's structure than it has done in decades, with high arched front windows, a false front parapet, restored patterned brick, and restored rear and upper level windows. In recognition of their commitment to the architectural heritage of the Region, the Foundation is pleased to present Michael Clifton, Mark Kok, and John Dorey with its Award of Excellence.
