Notes |
- In the 1901 Canadian Census it is recorded that Christian and Eva Binkle immigrated in 1853. A record has been found of an Eva Ehresmann and Christ Binkel arriving on Dec 17, 1852 in New York by ship, the Thef? New York, out of Le Havre, France. The origin of this couple was Bavaria. Birth and christening records indicate this couple came from Winterbach, Pfalz, Bavaria. As Eva is shown on this ship's passenger list as surname Ehresmann the assumption has to be made that they were married after arrival in North America. No marriage document has been found yet. Between 1853 and 1861 no information about this couple can be found until they are enumerated in Carrick Twp, Bruce County. The 1861 acgricultural census indicates this was at Con 5, Lot 34. It is uncertain when the family moved to Howick Twp in Huron County but there is evidence it may have been shortly after the 1861 census. The obituary for Jacob Binkle, Christian's son, indicates he lived in Carrick Twp for 3 years. Jacob was born 1856 so the time frame in the obit must have been off by a bit. Another son, Christian John, was born in Howick Twp in 1866 according to his marriage registration.
Christian Binkle received a Crown Patent on Mar 18, 1870 for 102 acres at Con 16, Lot 25, Howick Township in Huron County. Later, on Dec 9, 1881 Christian buys the adjoining 50 acres, the east half of Lot 24. Christian and Eva Binkle owned these properties until Mar 13, 1903 when it was sold to Hills. He held the mortgage on the properties until 1909 when discharged.
The 1871 Canadian census has incorrectly transcribed the surname Binkle as Pingley. The family is recorded as Christian and his spouse along with children Henry, Jacob, Philipana, Christian, Mary and Herman. Philip is not with the family and has not been found in the 1871 census. The Binkle's have improved 40 acres at this time and it is recorded that the livestock consists of 2 horses, 2 colts, 2 oxen, 2 milch cows, 4 other cattle, 13 sheep, 9 swine and 1 hive of bees.
An 1879 Howick Township Atlas map clearly shows Chris Binkley on Lot 25. In 1881 the census still has the Binkles living in Howick. Children still at home are Jacob, Christian, Mary and Herman (Almont). Henry has married Mary Weber on Feb 4, 1879 and Philipine marries Mary Weber's brother, Ludwig Weber on Dec 30, 1879.
Although Christian and Eva still own the Howick Twp property by the 1901 Canadian census they are found living in Clifford with only Herman at home. Jacob married Howick Twp neighbour Sophia Werner on Mar 14, 1882 and in a double ceremony Christian marries Elizabeth Wiegner and Mary weds John Dietz on Jan 20, 1887. Herman marries Anna Demmerling in 1908.
Eva dies on Jul 16, 1904 and Christian Binkley passes on Dec 7, 1910. Both are buried in Clifford Cemetery.
