- ELMIRA Lorene and Glen Schreiber were out for a drive on Sunday to look at their former home in Hawkesville. They loved their country place, but a year ago the couple knew the upkeep of the hobby farm was no longer practical. That's when the Lorene, 75, and Glen, 81, moved into Chartwell Elmira Retirement Residence a year ago in August. After attending the service at Hawkesville Mennonite Church, which they did every week, the couple was visiting their old farm when a car crash took both their lives. Lorene died in the crash, while Glen was airlifted to hospital but died later. Waterloo Regional Police said no charges will be laid in the crash between the car driven by Glen Schreiber and a pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old Brussels man near the area of Floradale and Listowel roads.
Colleen Frey, niece to Lorene Schreiber, said her aunt and uncle loved their farm. Throughout the years, they had chickens and rabbits and often invited area children to the farm to visit with the animals.
"He loved to entertain the neighbourhood children," said Frey of Floradale, who was like a daughter to the Schreibers. The couple did not have children of their own. At the retirement residence, Glen often watered the plants in the greenhouse and lent a helping hand to those who needed assistance. "They were quite social and devoted to each other. You seldom saw one without the other," said retirement residence general manager Joan Norris. Norris said the couple had many friends at the home, some of whom they knew from the community. "It's a huge impact on staff and residents," she said. "Everyone was shocked. There were a lot of tears." "They will be missed," Norris said.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Hawkesville Mennonite Church on Thursday. Internment will take place in Hawkesville Mennonite Cemetery.
