Notes |
- Death of Mr. B. Bender, SR.
Mr. Burckhardt Bender, Sr., a successful and prosperous farmer from Wallace, who has lived retired in town for the past six years, died at his residence on Wallace St. on Saturday last and was buried on Tuesday at Fairview. Mr. Bender was a vigorous, energetic man and soon made a competence at farming and provided his sons with good farms in the neighborhood of the sixth of Wallace where the homestead is situated and then retired to town to enjoy a well earned leisure. He was in the 65th year of his age at the time of his death and though he has been failing for the past year was still a very vigorous looking man. He was born in Eschelbach, Germany on the 7th of December 1837 and came to Canada with his parents in 1847, the family settling in Woolwich township, Co. Waterloo. He was a fine sample of the hardy, industrious and upright settlers of which his country has sent so many to build up Canada, where they have generally become prosperous and valued citizens. He was married in 1859 to Elizabeth Welker, who survives him, though she is just recovering from a serious illness. Of their family of eight children, two predeceased him. He came into Wallace in 1863 and to live in Listowel in 1895. His death was due to pernicous annaemia [sic]. He had been since 1852 a valued member of the German Evangelical Association, joining that church through the ministration of Solomon Weber. Besides his sorrowing wife and six surviving children there are living seventeen grandchildren, a brother, a step-sister and many other relatives to mourn his loss. The family wish to express their thanks to the friends and neighbors for assistance and sympathy during the illness of the deceased and also for the floral offerings for the funeral. The services were conducted by the Rev. L. K. Eidt, of town and Rev. M. Maurer, of Clifford, and the sermon was preached from a text, Gen. 24, 56 chosen by the deceased. Mr. Bender was open-hearted and kindly in disposition and made many friends. He was a Liberal in politics.
