Notes |
- Walter Wells, 1833 - 1912
Born in 1833 in King Township, north of Toronto, Walter Wells spent his early years on the family farm. At age 19 he moved to Galt (Cambridge) where he learned the iron and steel working trade. He left for Canandgua, New York for several years to work in the metal assembly trade. Upon return to Berlin (Kitchener) he established a carriage and wagon making shop on Caroline Street in Waterloo in partnership with Isaac Weaver. In 1866, with the management of his business entrusted to his employees, Wells attended the Royal College of Dental Surgeons. Graduating in 1868, he set up a dental practice above Simon Snyder's drug store on King Street. Wells spent 44 years working in the dental profession before retiring in 1910. Wells interests included the Masonic Order and the Ancient Order of Workmen. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Westside Park (now Waterloo Park) in 1890 and sat on the first Board of Park Management. In 1876, Wells was elected to the first town council. He continued as an alderman until 1878 and was later re-elected from 1887-1889. Unlike his predecessors, Wells was elected mayor in 1893 without first having served on council as a deputy reeve or reeve. During that year land for the construction of a joint Berlin-Waterloo Hospital was donated by Joseph E. Seagram. Authority to electrify the street railway was also granted in 1893 and council that year also introduced annual fees for stalls in the Waterloo market.

DEATH OF DR WALTER WELLS
Old and Valuable Citizen of Waterloo Passed Away on Sunday Morning
WELLS - At Waterloo on Sunday, March 10th, 1912, Walter Wells, L.D.S., in his 79th year.
The Funeral (private) took place on Wednesday, March 13th, at 3 p.m. from the family residence on Caroline St. to Mount Hope cemetery.
The late Dr. Walter Wells was born in the township of King. County of York, Ontario, (about 35 miles north of Toronto) on September 18th, 1833, and was therefore nearly 78 ½ years of age at the time of his decease. He spent his early days on the farm, and at the age of seventeen came to Galt and for some years thereafter devoted his time to working in iron and steel at Galt and at Canadagua, N. Y. He afterwards engaged in carriage making at Berlin and Waterloo
About 1866 he began the study of dentistry, passed his examination at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario in 1868, and practised dentistry successfully at Waterloo until two years ago when he retired from active work. At that time he was probably the oldest dentist in active practice in Canada, and his 44 years of continuous work in his profession may also possibly have been a record.
In his earlier years he was an active worker in the public interest, having been town councillor for a number of years and also mayor number for one term. He was one of those one most actively engaged in securing for Waterloo its fine park and was one of the first members of the Park Board.
He was a member of the Masonic Order and also of the Ancient Order of United Workmen; in politics he was always a Reformer.
In 1856 he was married to Isabella Tyson, who predeceased him in 1881. In 1887 he was married to Rosina Roos, who survives him. The children now living are Mrs. James D. McColl (Clara), Kansas City, Mo.; Clayton W. Wells, Waterloo; Mrs. Jas. Bladon (Lola), Minneapolis, Minn.; John A. Wells, Assistant City Assessor, Nashville, Tennessee; Walter B. Wells, Vancouver, B. C.; Gertrude Wells, Waterloo; Lyman S. Wells, Prince Rupert, B. C. A daughter and son, Wilhelmina and Lambert, died at an early age, and Mrs. (Dr.) Levi Clemens (Edith) passed away in 1897.
The late Walter Wells was an active man for his years until the past couple of years when the infirmities of age told on him, and these wore him out and caused his death.
