- Well known RC priest Jerome Arnold dies
Rev. Jerome Louis Arnold, a prominent local teacher and pastor of parishes in Kitchener, Waterloo and St. Agatha, died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Brantford, after a lengthy illness. He was 70.
Born in Kitchener, Arnold attended St. Jerome's high school, studied theology at St. Peter's seminary, London, received his BA from St. Louis University and his BA from the University of Western Ontario.
Following post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago, he received his first vows in The Congregation of the Resurrection in 1927, his final vows in 1931, and was ordained to the priesthood in London in 1933.
Arnold served at St. Jerome's College from 1937 to 1955, and was superior of that house from 1949 to 1955. After serving one year in North Bay, he returned to St. Jerome's until 1962, when sent to Resurrection College
In 1963, Arnold moved to Kentucky, where he served at St. Mary's College Seminary and at St. Cecilia's Parish in Louisville. He returned to Resurrection College in 1969.
He was pastor of St. Mary's parish, Kitchener, from 1970 to 1971, pastor of St. Louis parish, Waterloo, from 1971 to 1975, and pastor of St. Agatha parish from 1975 to 1978. He served at St. Pius X parish in Brantford until 1979 and in 1980 he was appointed to the Pastoral Care team of St. Joseph's Hospital in Brantford.
An avid golfer and fan of detective stories, Arnold also served as chairman of the Kitchener library board in the late 1950s. The son of the late Alfred Arnold and the former Frances Noon, Arnold is survived by a brother, Paul, and a sister, Kathleen (Mrs. Nelson Wedge), both of Kitchener. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
