The Demise of Mr. B. U. Clemens
WIDELY KNOWN CITIZEN CALLED TO GREAT BEYOND.
The community today mourns the loss of a widely known citizen, namely Mr. Benjamin U. Clemens, who passed away at four o'clock yesterday afternoon after a protracted illness.
Mr. Clemens had been confined to his home since New Years, the first affliction being pneumonia. When on the road to complete recovery la grippe set in and during the past three weeks he had been confined to his home. About a week ago the illness assumed a serious aspect from which there was to be no rally.
The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Clemens of North Dumfries, where the subject of this sketch was born. His mother, Catherine Unger, predeceased him only a few months ago at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. The late Mr. Clemens was in his sixty-ninth year. His early life was spent on the farm. Subsequently he with his brother, Mr. John U. Clemens, conducted a general store at New Dundee. But for the past forty years he has practically been a resident of this city continuously. For the past thirteen years he was on the staff of the Merchants Rubber Co., where his services were highly valued. During his long residence here he made many warm friends. His geniality, sociality and personality in general made his association and companionship a delight. Mr. Clemens also was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
In 1873 he was married to Marian Bricker who with one daughter, Mrs. Fred Scandrett, and one grandson. Frederick John Scandrett, of Montreal, survive him. The following also survive:
Eight brothers and two sisters namely, Mrs. Oliver Berger of New Dundee: Joseph Clemens, city; Nathaniel, New Dundee: Moses, Marlett Mich.; Wendell of Breslau; Henry U of city: James, Brown City, Mich. John of Galt: Allen of Brown City Mich.; Mrs. Lewis Block of Pontiac
Mich. The funeral will be held at 2.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon at the residence, 85 North Foundry Street thence to Mt. Hope Cemetery.
