One of those old British soldiers who never knows when he has had enough service died here today in the person of Charles W. Hoy, Pinke street. Ill for more than a year. Mr. Hoy, who was 76, died at St. Mary's Hospital at 7.30 o'clock this morning Born in England. Mr. Hoy enlisted at an early age in the Royal Marines and served in many parts of the Empire. Outstanding among his memories was the splendor of the celebrations which marked Queen Victoria's jubilee while he was on duty in India.
Mr. Hoy ultimately left the service to come to Canada 32 years ago. but his absence from His Majesty's forces was to be but temporary When war broke out in 1914. he sought to join the Canadian army but was rejected on account of his age He persisted, however, and in 1916. was accepted by the 256th Battalion with which unit he went overseas. His Great War service was confined to England after he had been ruled unfit for active participation in front line fighting.
