Notes |
- C. Leslie Vincent, Leading Ayr Citizen
A well-known retired Ayr businessman, and former district farmer, Charles Leslie Vincent passed away in South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt, on Tuesday morning. He was in his 74th year. Mr. Vincent had been hospitalised for a week following a coronary attack, and his demise resulted from a second seizure. Active in Community Centre Project One of Ayr's outstanding public-spirited citizens, Mr. Vincent was identified with many worthwhile projects. He was one of the most active members of the building committee when the Ayr Community Centre was erected in 1948, and was also on its original trustee board.
Owned Implement Business 30 Years
Mr. Vincent was one of the village's senior businessmen, operating a farm implement business here for 30 years, until retiring two years ago. Moved to District 50 Years Ago Born on his parents' farm in East Zorra Township, he was a son of the late Charles Vincent and Mary Jane Cowing. He moved to this district in 1906, where he farmed on the 9th concession of Blenheim on the land now owned by Donald Robson.
Farmed in South Dumfries 40 Years
A year later he moved to the farm on the 6th concession of South Dumfries now owned by James Buck, where he was a successful farmer for 40 years. During this period he established the implement business in Ayr, and moved here eight years ago to devote his entire time to it. Upon his retirement it came into the hands of his two sons, but Mr. Vincent retained a keen interest in its welfare.
Noted Plowman
As a farmer Mr. Vincent developed extraordinary skill with the plow and was among the leading competitors in plowing matches in the district. He was one of the early members of the North Dumfries Plowmen's Association, and his service to the organisation was rewarded with an appointment as honorary life director.
Kept. Prizewinning Horses
Mr. Vincent had an experienced eye for horses, and during his farming career always stabled handsome drivers and light horses. They were often among the prize-winners at district fairs and shows. While in South Dumfries he was a valued member of the Townline Community Club. Mr. Vincent was a member and regular attendant of Knox United Church. He formerly served on the board of managers.
