RETAILER SEBASTIAN ENGLERT SR. DIES AT 93
Sebastian Englert Sr., the dean of Kitchener retailers, died Wednesday at his home, 380 Wellington St. N. Kitchener he was 93. He joined the staff of Beck and Schell, a grocery store at 16 king St. E. in Kitchener in 1901 at the age of 13, In 1926, he became a partner and the store became Schell and Englert. The partnership was dissolved in 1954 and Englert planned to retire. But when his son, Sebastian Jr., purchased the property for a gift shop. his father decided to stay on as a salesman. He continued to go to the store until a few years ago and was still selling well into his 80s. When he started in the grocery business, he worked 72 hours a week and wages were $100 a year. In a 1974 interview, he recalled butter at 25 cents a pound, milk at 5 cents a quart, bread at 10 cents a loaf and potatoes at 75 cents for a 75 pound bag. Top grade beef went for 15 cents to 25 cents a pound. He had to hand mix individual tea blends and package customers' purchases in rolled up newspapers because there weren't any paper bags. Matches were made by breaking off pieces from a solid block of wood topped with sulphur King Street in those days was just mud with no cars and no driving rules for horses and buggies. Englert and his wife the former Mary Kroetsch, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1974. She predeceased him in 1978. Surviving are two sons. four daughters and one brother. The mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Kitchener, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
