    • Memorable Manitobans: James Johnson Anderson (1851-1912)
      Physician and surgeon.

      Born in Grantville County, Ontario on 5 November 1851, son of James J. Anderson and Elizabeth Hyndman, he worked on the family farm from 1866 to to 1869 then lived with an uncle, Dr. W. J. Anderson and worked successively as a clerk then manager of the Winchester Springs Sanatorium. From 1881 to 1888 he studied medicine at the sanatorium, graduating from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1887. In the fall of 1888 he went to New York city for a year of postgraduate training. He came to Manitoba in 1889 and set up a practice at Wawanesa. In 1894 he relocated to Brandon where he remained until his death. From 1903 to 1909 he was Superintendent of the Brandon Asylum then took another year of postgraduate training at Baltimore, Chicago, and New York.

      He was married twice, first (in 1897) to Catherine H. Holdgate of Winnipeg, who died a year later. He married Barbara McBride Dahl of Berlin, Ontario in April 1903. They had three children: Arthur Johnson Anderson (1906-1909), Helen M. Anderson (b 1908), and Harry L. Anderson (b 1910).

      He died at Brandon on 21 September 1912.
