- KINGSDALE TRAGEDY - Edward Bender Dies In Crossing Crash
Edward Bender, 41, of 150 Bridgeport Rd., Waterloo, was instantly killed early last night when the car he was driving was demolished by a Grand River Railway radial at King St. crossing. The crash occurred shortly after 6: 30 p.m. at the point opposite Sixth Ave., Kingsdale, where a crossing over the tracks links the two travel lanes of King St. East. - CAR TOSSED 76 FEET - The westbound trolley sheared almost the entire roof and sides from the light car and tossed the vehicle 76 feet. Bender's body was picked up about 62 feet from the crash. A door, ripped free in the crash lay at the crossing. The auto came to rest in the east railway ditch.
EDWARD BENDER
The car broke the brake air-line pipe on the radial, causing the train to travel 550 feet before stopping. Bender died of internal hemorrhages. Traffic Officer Vernon Diekert investigated. -
DAMAGE. LISTED AT $1,800
The radial motorman was James Riddell of 14 Chalmer St., North, Galt, police said. Damage to the car was estimated at about $1,600 and to the train, $200. Police said the car was proceeding slowly when it turned right off King St. onto Sixth Ave. Bender reportedly stopped at a Kitchener garage for car repairs shortly before the mishap. He was believed to be proceeding to a friend's home. No inquest will be held. Bender was born in Perth County Feb. 17, 1888. He was employed by the Wunder Construction Co., Ltd., and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Surviving are his wife, the former Leah Brubacher; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Habermehl; two sons, Earl of Waterloo and Lonre [sic] Lorne of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Clayton (Marie) Sobisch of Waterloo and Ruth of Hamilton; three brothers, John of Clifford, Martin of Listowel and William of Gowanstown; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Koch of Gowanstown and Mrs. Albert Chapman of Atwood; nine grandchildren. The body is resting at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, Waterloo, where the funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Memory Gardens on the Breslau highway with Rev. G. F.
