      By Frances McIntosh, niece

Paula Koenig was born in 1890 to Frances and Bernard Koenig, their eldest child. She arrived in Kitchener at the age of 13, already an accomplished pianist and a medal winning student as well. Her family of eight younger sisters and brothers remember her as loving and kind, and quite adored her. Her life changed suddenly when, at the age 17, the sudden death of her father, leaving eight children and his wife pregnant with the ninth, cast her into a role she had never imagined. She became the support and right hand of her mother, using her musical skills to bring in income, and her loving nature to help bring up the younger children. She became the organist at St. Paul's when her mother moved to the new St. Matthew's Church and gave music lessons along with her mother. Tragically, she died at the age of 24.
