Notes |
- A steam engineer by trade, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 24 Sept 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada. Private Snyder was an original member of the First Canadian Contingent's 'E' Company, 6th Battalion (Fort Garry Horse). The First Canadian Contingent embarked from Quebec City on Saturday, 3 Oct 1914, sailing to England. The first Canadian Contingent, the largest convoy ever to cross the Atlantic, was comprised of over 31,000 troops who were aboard 31 ocean liners escorted by Royal Navy warships. Also sailing with them was a contingent from the British Dominion of Newfoundland, still separate from Canada at the time.
Private Nelson Snyder is commemorated on Page 504 of Canada's First World War Book of Remembrance.
He is honoured and remembered on the Snider Family's grave headstone in the Elmira Union Cemetery in Elmira, Ontario, Canada.
